Join us for a guided tour of S1 Artspace’s future home at 2 Haymarket, the Grade II listed former Yorkshire Bank Chambers in Sheffield City Centre. Places are limited.
Built in 1871 as Sheffield’s Head General Post Office, this sandstone landmark has witnessed the city’s evolution - serving as the Sheffield Stock Exchange for over 50 years before becoming a Yorkshire Bank branch until 2014.
S1 Artspace is in the early stages of bringing this long-vacant building back into public use as a permanent home for arts and culture. The visit will include an introduction to the building’s history, a walk-through of the building, and an overview of S1’s emerging plans for restoration and re-use.
S1’s plans include public galleries across two floors, artist studios, creative workspace, space for learning and community activity, and an independent basement bar. Together, these will contribute to the wider regeneration of Castlegate, alongside neighbouring projects including Harmony Works and the redeveloped Sheffield Castle site.
You’ll hear about the opportunity and complexity of adapting a historic commercial building for contemporary cultural use, including the current programme of essential repairs, the project’s phased approach, and how S1 is working with its design team and partners to balance conservation, access and long-term sustainability.
