In celebration of Weston Park Museum's big birthday, SSA members have agreed to deliver a talk to celebrate the architecture of our city. Join SSA members for a lunchtime event exploring the bold, challenging, and often controversial architectural legacy of 1970s Sheffield. Through a series of talks, we’ll delve into the city’s modernist and brutalist landmarks, both built and imagined. Presentations will be delivered by local architects, academics and residents reflecting specifically on the iconic Park Hill and Hyde Park flats, examining how these monumental housing schemes evolved through ambition, decline, and regeneration.
We will also discuss the broader architectural landscape of 1970s Sheffield, from concrete civic buildings to educational and industrial structures, considering their social context, design intent, and enduring impact. And we will uncover the fascinating story behind Superstudio’s unrealised masterplan for Sheffield: a radical, utopian vision that reimagined the city at a vast, conceptual scale. Whether you love or loathe this era of architecture, this event offers a unique opportunity to reconsider Sheffield’s skyline through a critical and creative lens.
Expect lively discussion, striking visuals, and surprising insights.
