Join the SSA and Jefferson Sheard for a rare Modernist Treat on 19 June.

In 1958 Bryan Jefferson and Gerry Sheard established Jefferson Sheard and Partners. Sixty years on and the legacy of the Practice’s early projects have shaped the look and feel of Sheffield and make up a major contribution to the modernist heritage of the city.

The practice have retained a body of documentary material from Jefferson Sheard’s early projects throughout the period of post-war regeneration and its changed political perspectives, many of these projects being here in Sheffield. The archive material documents not only the technical aspects of the projects but a social commentary too, with many of these schemes being inherently visionary in nature some taken by notably photographers of the time.

From a series of smaller scale mid-century-modern style private houses in Huddersfield, to the confident, candid Hinde House school in Sheffield, built from black concrete, to the Tokyo-inspired and immaculately detailed Moore Street substation, these projects are a window into a very particular social narrative and evolving built environment in Britain – one of optimism and collective spirit …. and lots of concrete!

In celebration of the practice's 60th anniversary, the SSA have arranged a one-off special viewing of the archive materials for the branch so please join us for what promises to be a fascinating evening.
