Tour led by - Studio Gedye
Just before Christmas Sheffield Society of Architects went on a tour to see the new SUM Studios in Heeley. The studios are within a group of grade II listed Ann's Grove school buildings, and include spaces for Arts, Business and Community uses. The project and spaces are run by Heeley Development Trust, and one building has been finished and opened in 2013 with the others opening in phases, cumulating in the landscaping of the courtyard space between the buildings.
The project is a collaboration between the Heeley Development Trust and Studio Gedye, and refurbishes the existing buildings whilst adding new sustainable features such as solar panels and refurbished triple glazed windows to match the existing.
Studio B is divided up into a number of units using old classroom spaces with the corridor that runs down the building retained, but refreshed with a colourful branding strategy. Playing on the school theme, the branding strategy by Peter + Paul ties together the whole building, with 'O Levels' on the ground floor and 'A Levels' above noted with bright signage elements.
