Sheffield's Steel Pandas

8.30am, Tuesday 8th December 2020

A webinar led by David Wei of Hatch Architects

This webinar is available to watch via this link https://youtu.be/V1liozTvGGg

As part of wider art installations at Sheffield's New Era Development, three steel panda sculptures have been installed - one upon the roof, one climbing a column, and one sitting amongst the landscaping! We are very pleased that David Wei of Hatch Architects, designers of the steel pandas, has agreed to tell us their story.

A UK-qualified architect, Wei is renowned for producing visually inspiring art works for flagship Chinese developments – taking influence for the Sheffield sculptures from a giant panda art installation on the side of a shopping centre in Sheffield’s sister city of Chengdu in China.

The panda is a symbol for friendship and peace in Chinese culture, and the joyful display is now in place at one of Sheffield's most visible developments.

We are also pleased that the pandas were assembled by local Sheffield firm Campbell Design and Engineering Ltd.
